On Sunday, March 13, VABA held its third annual VDBL Championships at John Paul Jones Arena.  This was a wonderful occasion where all four divisions of the VDBL Boys league held the final game between the two remaining teams left in the Championship Tournament.

The 1:00 pm matchup #1-seeded Saints against the #3-seed Black Knights for the 5th grade Divisoin title.  The final regular season game between these two teams had the Black Knights pulling off the upset, and the Saints were set on avenging this defeat and bringing home the first Saints championship in three VDBL seasons.  However, this was not to be.  The Black Knights and Saints were neck-and-neck throughout the first two and a half quarters when the Black Knights went on a run and pulled away for the victory, 34-22.

The 2:30 pm matchup for the 6th grade Division Championship pitted the two top seeds against each other - the #1-seeded Patriots (11-1) against the #2-seed Warriors (9-2).  After the first quarter, this game was tied, but the Patriots eventually pulled away for a 33-24 victory in the end.

The third game of the day was for the 7th grade Division champsionship.  The top-seeded Patriots (12-1) went head-to-head with the upset-minded Saints (#2-seed, 10-3).  This game was a tight context through most of the first half.  In the third quarter, the Patriots depth and athleticism eventually took over, bringing the Patriots their second championship of the afternoon, 54-42.

The grande finale 5:30 pm contest was between the #1-seeded Dragons (11-2) and the #3-seed Patriots who were coming off an amazing come-from-behind victory in the semi-finals against the #2-seeded Warriors.  The Patriots and Dragons fought hard, and after the second quarter the game was close.  But, once again, the third quarter proved to be the difference, and after coming in third two years ago, and second in last year's final game, the Dragons finally ran away with the championship, taking the title home to Greene County with a 57-40 victory.

It was a thrilling day of action at JPJ Arena and a wonderful time had by all!  Congratulations to all teams for a wonderful season!
