What a terrific day of basketball in the greatest new arena on the east coast! Hundreds of fans from different reaches of the Charlottesville area flocked to John Paul Jones arena to support their local youth basketball players in their quest for their league championship trophy.
The undefeated Mustangs defeated the Flucos to take home the 5th grade division crown. And, for the second consecutive season, the 6th grade division championship was won by the Black Knights, in a closely contested battle with the 6th grade Warriors. The 7th grade championship was a game of runs - with the Flucos taking a 20-piont lead into the half. But, the scrappy Dragons fought all the way back, holding the Flucos to one free throw in the third quarter. With just over a minute to play, the Dragons had cut the deficit to six and the Greene County contingent was urging their team on. But, the powerfully athletic and skills Flucos executed in the waning seconds, converting on their free throws and took the 7th grade championship back to Fluvanna. The 8th grade Championship was an epic battle between the two most evenly-matched teams in the VDBL over the past two seasons: the Patriots and the Warriors. In what has turned into a beautiful rivalry, the Warriors took home the 8th grade Division Championship to avenge their loss from last season's championship game in which the Patriots won.
No matter the outcome, the atmostphere was incredible! ESPN 840 broadcast the contests via a life streaming video feed with play-by-play from Mike Tingle and Jess Shifflett. The music was pumping and the fans were jumping! Thank you for all those who came out and supported our athletes, our teams, our league and our organization.
We hope to see you this Sunday, March 14 at our Awards Banquet.
