Biography

Ian Caskill was born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA. He began his basketball journey at the age of 6 and has been in love with the game ever since. The sport of basketball has been good to Coach Caskill, taking him all over the world.  After a successful Division I playing career (at James Madison University), and then a professional career overseas - and, then a Division I coaching tenure at his alma mater (with the Lady Dukes), Coach Caskill settled in Crozet, VA in 2022.

Coach Caskill played varsity basketball at Cox High School in Virginia Beach, where he was a 1,000-point scorer and, to this day, remains one of only two Cox alumni to be selected 1st Team All-State.   As a scholastic athlete, Coach Caskill helped lead his teams to win two AAU National Championships. He also participated in the prestigious Nike All-American Basketball Camp and was selected as a McDonalds All-American Nominee.

Coach Caskill was recruited by several mid- and high-major college basketball programs and finally signed with James Madison University, where he played for four years and remains one of the top-10 all-time program leaders in rebounding. During his time at JMU, he was coached and developed by Coach D’Alessandro – learning The VABA Way before VABA was even formed. As a senior at JMU, Coach Caskill averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds while leading the Colonial Athletic Association Conference in field goal percentage.

After his time at JMU, Coach Caskill packed his suitcase and headed overseas, where he enjoyed a 12-year professional basketball career, playing the first year in Austria and the following 11 years on various teams throughout France. During his career in France, Coach Caskill was consistently a league leader in rebounds and in player efficiency ratings, and he led his teams to two league championships.

Following his professional career, Coach Caskill had the pleasure of returning to his alma mater, JMU, where he was an assistant women’s basketball coach for six seasons, finishing his coaching career with an overall record of 117 wins and 40 losses. Coach Caskill’s expertise in developing post players utilizes the same techniques he learned from Coach D’Alessandro as a collegiate player.

Coach Caskill is a welcome member of The VABA Team and the overall VABA Community!   Coach Caskill contributes his time in the form of individual and small-group training as well as serving as a head coach in the well-known VABA Bruins Travel program.
